Shoppers taking advantage of the back-to-school tax free holiday will likely pick up things like clothes, supplies and even computers. But diapers?
Alabama’s back-to-school tax holiday starts Friday, July 15 at 12:01 a.m. and ends Sunday, July 17th at midnight. The weekend gives shoppers the chance to purchase approved items without paying 4% state sales tax with and counties waiving their sales taxes as well.
According to the Alabama Department of Revenue, diapers are included on the list of clothing items costing $100 or less that are tax exempt during the weekend.
Other included items are school supplies valued at $50 or less per item; books that cost $30 or less per book; and tablets, laptops, computers, and printers selling for $750 or less.
And while diapers are included, there are several somewhat surprising things that aren’t part of the event:
Items needed for sewing – including fabric, pins, patterns, threat, etc. – are not covered under the tax-free weekend. Neither are cleats or athletic gear or dance shoes, roller skates or sports gloves.
The only hand-held electronic devices that are covered are personal schedulers “except devices that are cellular phones,” so phones aren’t exempt. Neither are cosmetics, jewelry, band instruments or gaming systems.
