I am 52-year-old and I cannot control urine. I keep rushing to washroom again and again. Before I reach toilet, I often wet my panties. My friends say that its due to menopause. Is it normal and happen to all women. I feel so embarrassed. I have stopped visiting friends and going out as they have labelled me as ‘Toilet seeker’.I feel depressed as I have started wearing adult diapers for the same. Do I have to suffer whole life now?

Answer: It is common for women after menopause to face urinary issues like urinary frequency, urgency and inability to hold bladder for longer hours as they were used to in younger years. Many times, they leak urine before reaching the washroom. The reason being vaginal dryness (atrophy) due to lack of hormones and also a condition called overactive Bladder (OAB). Women suffer for many years considering these symptoms as a part of ageing process. Many face challenges of always wearing diapers and related infections.

With advancement of research in medical science and emergence of dedicated specialty of Urogynaceology, treatment of these conditions is possible now to a large extent. One needs to contact a specialist to look into these conditions and do a thorough evaluation so as to reach to a correct diagnosis.

Overactive bladder can be managed easily by modifying fluid intake based on your bladder capacity. A basic sonography of pelvis, urinary bladder and kidneys can help to evaluate your bladder capacity and any residual urine after passing urine. A Uro-gynaecologist will ask you to make a bladder diary by measuring the volumes of urine passed everytime you go toilet. A close evaluation of intake and output is done to make a diagnosis and necessary medications of overactive bladder can be started. Hormonal vaginal creams also help in improving vaginal dryness and therefore can improve urinary symptoms. Approaching the correct doctor for help and discussing the options available rather than ignoring the symptoms can bring early relief and prevents deterioration of symptoms with ongoing menopausal changes.
