Metro Council members are advancing resolutions calling on state lawmakers to end taxes on diapers and feminine hygiene products.

The community affairs, housing, health and education committee heard from the sponsors of the resolutions Wednesday.

They said that eliminating sales and use taxes on diapers would help struggling families. In addition, they argued taxes on feminine hygiene products place an undue burden on women, who must buy these medically necessary items.

"That's just an unequitable sales tax because certainly the men don't have to pay this particular tax," said District 7 Metro Councilwoman Paula McCraney.

Both measures passed the committee and will be placed on the consent calendar to be voted on by full council.

The most recent state where the elimination of the "Pink Tax" has taken effect was Louisiana.

There are currently 20 states who have eliminated this tax and two more states set to take effect next year.
