It's time to invest in excellent sleep!

Interior design star Nate Berkus is an expert at finding and incorporating well-made products in the home. "Personally and for my clients, there's nothing I include in the house—from a coffee cup to a butter knife—that isn't well-designed," he tells House Beautiful. "It's really important and everyone should know that you don't need to sacrifice design to be comfortable."

One room he felt this philosophy applied most is the bedroom. Whether you're moving into a new place or looking to do a refresh, you should make sure where you get your rest is in tip-top shape and that starts with having a premium quality mattress. It's why he collaborated with cutting-edge mattress company Beautyrest earlier this year. "We're nicer, happier, and more productive when we get a good night's sleep," Berkus says.

As people start to rethink their spaces—especially with a new season just a few weeks away and all the Labor Day Mattress sales going on—we figured this would be the perfect time to revisit his Beautyrest line and recap his tips on putting together the perfect bedroom. Whether it's avoiding the dreaded matching sets to why you shouldn't risk not having a mattress protector, keep reading to learn (and likely buy) a lot!

"Any good designer knows there are areas where you should invest and areas where you don't have to," says Berkus. "A well-made mattress, for me, is the absolute first place to start. Then, buy the headboard and other furniture. People make a lot of mistakes with sets of bedroom furniture and I'm here to say, you can do better financially and aesthetically."

The mattress features micro-diamond memory foam with unparalleled pressure relief. In addition, it has a Berkus-designed, limited-edition herringbone cover made out of sustainable fabric from 50 plastic bottles found in the ocean. It's eco-friendly form meets function at its finest!

Don't check out without a mattress protector in your cart. "When my kids were little, I didn't have mattress protectors, but it's essential," he explains. "There are spills and potty training. A good mattress is an investment so it's smart to have a mattress protector designed for the mattress you own."

Speaking of children and where they sleep, he added that durable furniture a child can grow into is the key to designing a next-level kid's room. "Invest in things kids can have for a really long time like our daughter's changing table was a vintage chest of drawers that we found and added a changing table top to," he shares. "When she wasn't in diapers anymore, we unscrewed it and now she has a beautiful chest of drawers. I don't think you should only have 'kids furniture in a kid's room.' She might use the drawers in the entry of her apartment or home one day."

Snagging vintage pieces is an easy way to add character and texture to your place. "For example, your nightstands don't have to match," he continues. "I've also draped vintage textiles over upholstered headboards which can easily be changed depending on your aesthetic. Plus, I'm a sucker for vintage lighting."

A mattress and mattress protector aren't the only things he designed. Berkus also has special Beautyrest pillows.

"I made sure to have black piping in my herringbone pattern, I did the same thing with the mattress pad," he says. "It drives me crazy when you can see color through a pillowcase and since the majority of people sleep with white bedding, I thought that was a crucial, thoughtful detail."

One thing's for sure, he's loyal to his sheets. "I always sleep on the same sheets and have a couple of the same kinds to use between seasons," he mentions. "I'm not the guy who moves to flannel when it's cold, but I will change the decorative pillows or maybe add a bolster on my bed from time to time."

Finally, layering blankets are also the move. "It's all about layering," he points out. "I'll add a blanket over the top sheet and under the duvet or under the comforter. Then, add a throw at the bottom of the bed or even a chunky wool knit."
