RAPID CITY, S.D. — There’s a huge need for baby diapers and Rapid City leaders are asking us to help meet that need. Mayor Steve Allender has declared next week as Diaper Need Awareness Week.

On average, diapers can cost $100 a month per child. Its a tough but necessary expense for low-income families because diapers cannot be purchased with food stamps or WIC vouchers.

Volunteers of America add to their campaigns like this awareness week that makes it possible to help those families with their diaper needs.

Pack and plays will be setup in Rapid City for donations at the following locations:

All sizes of diapers are accepted with an emphasized need for size 5 since children remain in that size longer than any other.

Monetary donations are also welcomed and can be dropped off at the VOA office at 111 New York Street. VOA says a $10 donation can buy a package of wipes, $25 buys a package of diapers and $500 can purchase a pallet of diapers.

Rapid City’s Mommy’s Closet is one of three diaper banks in South Dakota providing diapers to disadvantaged families through 16 community partnerships.

Annually the three diaper banks distribute more than 500,000 diapers to families across the state.
