CAPE CORAL, FL — A Florida mother is facing charges after police said her toddler was recently caught wandering their neighborhood with their pit bull.

Mary Jane Wright, 37, of Cape Coral has been charged with child neglect without great bodily harm.

On June 3 shortly after 9 a.m., police with the Cape Coral Police Department responded to a welfare check after a neighbor noticed an 18-month-old toddler walking unsupervised with a pit bull, which did not appear aggressive. The two were spotted at the intersection of NE 24th Terrace and NE 20th Avenue.

Once on scene, officers said they found the toddler in the intersection without pants or shoes on and wearing a soiled diaper. They returned the toddler home and met with Wright.

"Mary did not seem concerned. According to Officer Frazin, Mary stated she will wait for DCF to contact her," a portion of the incident report reads.

At Wright's home, police said they noticed that a front window was open and did not have a screen or any safety measures to prevent the toddler from exiting the house.

Police said the condition of the home also concerned them.

"I observed multiple over-filled garbage cans at the end of the driveway with trash everywhere. A broken-down vehicle in the front yard with broken windows and gas cans, which was being propped up by a floor jack. I observed numerous broken windows covered with cardboard and a large butcher knife in the driveway. I also observed various empty bottles of alcohol scattered throughout the yard," the police report reads.

"Upon checking the rear of the residence. I observed a large burn pit filled with trash, pieces of rusting and sharp metal and screws on the back patio. The exterior of the residence was not in any condition for any child to be walking barefoot, whether they were supervised or not," it continued.

When police asked Wright why she leaves her toddler unattended, she told police that her two 15-year-old children, 8-year-old child and 6-year-old child were supposed to be watching the toddler.

"Mary stated that DCF was already involved and that she was advised to get chimes for her doors and windows but has failed to do so," the police report said.

This is not the first time the toddler has been caught unsupervised. According to police, a neighbor told police that they've observed the toddler wandering the neighborhood two times a week unsupervised and often without clothes on.

Police ultimately arrested Wright. She was released from jail Saturday. Her next court appearance is July 5 at 8:30 a.m.

Wright is no stranger to the law. Lee County jail records show she's previously been charged with probation violation, battery and drugs.
