GRAND BLANC — ELGA Credit Union held its 10th annual ABC12 Diaper Drive on June 3. The day long drive yielded $192,000 and two box trucks full of diapers to benefit the Flint Diaper Bank.
The money raised will purchase diapers at below cost prices.
Event day brought out local heroes to lend a hand with collection. The Michigan State Police, Grand Blanc City, Grand Blanc Township Police, Grand Blanc Fire and Burton Police and Fire were all present to help in the effort.
This year’s drive was a record breaker putting 1.3 million diapers back into the community, helping bridge the gap for those in need.
“I’m in awe of our community’s huge heart. So many people came together to help parents who are struggling realize they are not alone and give them home. I’m grateful for every single penny and person who made this incredible day possible” said Angie Hendershot of ABC12 – Co-Founder of the Flint Diaper Bank.
“I am extremely proud of the ELGA Credit Union team and our community partners for collectively smashing the goal which will provide 1.3 million diapers for babies in need throughout Genesee County,” said Terry Katzur, CEO ELGA Credit Union.
Based on the data available, our community has approximately 4,500 children under the age of three living below the poverty level. Most Americans who have not faced this struggle personally are unaware the problem exists.
Families unable to afford diapers are forced to choose from a variety of undesirable alternatives that can severely impact the health and well-being of their child. Many families report that they have to cut back on basic needs such as food, utilities or childcare in order to purchase diapers.
Other families report leaving their children in soiled diapers for longer intervals than they normally would otherwise. Some even resort to cleaning out or drying soiled diapers and reusing them to meet their diaper needs.
Federal benefits such as Food Stamps or special supplemental programs like WIC cannot be spent on diapers.
