In the early childhood field, there is often talk about the first 2,000 days. This critical time period between birth and kindergarten is when the brain grows the fastest and developmental foundations that will last a lifetime are established. But when was the last time you talked about the first 2,000 diapers? It may not come up much in conversation but in the first year of life the average baby goes through over 2,000 diapers. That cost can add up quickly with most first year diapering estimates around $800 or more so it’s no wonder that diapers are one of the most needed items after the birth of a baby.
Smart Start of Transylvania County envisions a community in which every young child is thriving. This means leaning into partnerships with individuals, families and local organizations to influence and enhance the well-being of children. Last month to kick off the second year of the Family Connects program, Smart Start of Transylvania County held a community-wide diaper drive to “Show Some Love” to area families throughout the month of February. Smart Start is thrilled and humbled to report that “our village” showed up and it was able to collect over 12,000 diapers and almost 4,000 baby wipes. These items are being dispersed amongst community partners in order to benefit area families. Smart Start is grateful to all who donated, collected, and delivered diapers and supported this project.
