WATCH: Organization gives out formula, diapers to parents in need

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As the formula shortage worsens across the country, one group in the Mid-South is stepping in to make things easier for families who are struggling.

The company is called Sweet Cheeks and on Saturday, they held a free distribution event on Viscount Avenue to give away free diapers and formula to families.

“We usually have a distribution event every month but before I got here at 8 o’clock there were already 300 cars lined up. We never had to call for backup,” said Sweet Cheeks Founder Cori Smith. “That just goes to show how desperate our families are.”

Lines wrapped around 4 streets for the free products. Families said they couldn’t find any formula on the shelves so they’re grateful for the organization’s help.

“It’s important because if the baby doesn’t have the formula, whatever else they give them might mess up their system, so this is a great opportunity for those who can’t afford the milk or find it in the stores,” Bailey said.

“It’s a blessing man at a time with the economy so high and gas prices so high. Any help is better than none,” Ward said.

For the month of May, Sweet Cheeks got $20,000 in donations to buy the formula and diapers. The organizer said this is just a small way to give back to a Memphis community in need.

“I was once in that situation and I feel like no mother or family should have to worry about how they’re going to feed their child or diaper their child,” Smith explained.

The organization said they do these giveaways once a month and they’re expecting a lot of people to come next month.
