Parents may soon be done with having to pay the sales tax on diapers. Diapers are essential for babies but the cost can be a burden for parents.

Florida Representative Anna Eskamani tweeted Wednesday that diapers are now included in the Florida House’s Tax Package.

North Fort Myers mom, Brittany Carver, said in one week alone she was at least spending $45-50 because babies go through like eight to ten diapers a day.

It’s also something Lehigh Acres mom, Brooke Swift, knows first hand.

“I just try and save money anywhere I can so I really do look at it per diaper cost.”

Swift said diapers are so expensive she used to use all the coupons she could.

“I used to coupon when my 9-year-old was little. I would try and make it to where the diapers were like 15 cents a piece,” said Swift. Now even with coupons, a single diaper is $.20.

“This is an essential expense that families have to have that they should not be taxed on,” said Rep. Eskamani. Months ago she filed a bill to eliminate diaper sales tax in Florida altogether and recently, Eskamani said with the diaper tax in the House’s Tax Package, it means a year-long tax break on diapers in Florida starting July 1st.

Babies go through about 3,000 diapers their first year, that’s about $1,000. While a 6% tax might not seem like much at first, a tax ban could save parents around $600 a year.

Some parents say the move is overdue.

“Our hope is if we can actually get this across the finish line this could become something permanent in years to come,” said Eskamani.

The Senate still needs to approve the tax package before it’s a done deal.
