From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, the university will celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of the Latinx/Hispanic communities to the United States.

In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Elon University community will be provided with a variety of activities over the next four weeks to celebrate, engage with and learn about Latinx/Hispanic culture.

In 1968, former U.S. President Lyndon Johnson implemented Hispanic Heritage Week to celebrate the histories, cultures and contribution of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South American. Twenty years later, the week was expanded to a full 30-day period starting on Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 every year.

All are encouraged to use this time to learn about those with identities different from their own and to explore new ways of thinking, new connections and new cultures.

Thursday, Sept. 15 | Medallion Plaza | 5 – 7 p.m.

Come have fun with us as we kick off Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the independence of Mexico and the Central American countries.

Thursday, Sept. 15 | Upstairs Lakeside | 10:30 p.m. – midnight

Sept. 15 through Oct. 5 | Bins located in Kernodle Center, El Centro, CREDE and the Francis Center 

We will be collecting diapers for the Dream Center, which is a hub of activity for the Latinx/Hispanic community in Alamance County.

Tuesday, Sept. 20 | Phi Beta Kappa Commons | 9:40 – 10:30 a.m.

Join us for a special Hispanic Heritage Month Themed College Coffee, and enjoy some popular Hispanic breakfast items.

Sept. 21 and Sept. 22 | Lakeside 212 | 6 – 8 p.m. 

Join us for a two-day series of presentations on current issues in the Latinx/Hispanic Community. This year’s theme will focus on Health and Wellness.

Friday, Sept. 23 | Taphouse | 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. 

Wear your dancing shoes and enjoy Latin music, food, drinks and dances! Everyone is welcome, and entrance is free! Bring your Elon ID.

Sunday, Sept. 25 | Rudd Field | 1 p.m. 

Join us for an afternoon of fun, music and soccer as we cheer the Women’s Soccer Team playing against Monmouth University. Go Phoenix!

Stop by the library to check out books written by Latinx/Hispanic authors and/or related to Latinx/Hispanic culture and history.

Thursday, Sept. 29 | The Oak House | 5:30 – 7 p.m. 

Come watch different performances by Latinx and Hispanic students at our annual open mic night. Performances will range from musical pieces to spoken word.

Tuesday, Oct. 4 | Carlton 114 | 6 – 7 p.m.

We will be hosting a paint night for those who want to learn more about the Latinx/Hispanic students on campus, create relationships, and find support systems at Elon through the magic of art.

Wednesday, Oct. 5 | Upstairs Lakeside | 7 – 8 p.m. 

More than ever before, the crises that we face are converging into multidimensional issues. The climate, economic, housing, medical, and other related crises are plundering communities across the globe. How do we build power in movements based on reciprocity, love, and justice? Intersectional environmentalism is an inclusive approach to environmentalism that looks into advocating for the people and the planet simultaneously. Isaias will share their journey as a young Queer Brown environmentalist in pursuit of pushing forward climate literacy and building sustainable love that allows people to continue building power in movements.

Thursday, Oct. 6 | The Dream Center | 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. 

If you’re looking for an easy way to try out service at Elon this fall, the Kernodle Center offers a program called Get on the Bus. One of our opportunities is with the local City Gate Dream Center, assisting with their diaper distribution.

Tuesday, Oct. 11 | Lakeside 214 | 5:30 – 7 p.m.

Join us for an evening to learn about the complexity and intersectionalities of Latinx/Hispanic identities. There will be a panel formed by Elon students, faculty and staff that identify as Latinx/Hispanic.

The Elon network gathered to celebrate the impact of philanthropy, envision the future of the university together, and honor Trustee Ed Doherty and Joan Doherty P’07 with Elon Medallions.

Danielle 'Dani' Cooke, a dual-degree engineering alumna, trains neurosurgeons to use technology to cure tremors from conditions like Parkinson's Disease.

The Elon parents and supporters of the university were honored with the medallion, the university's highest honor for service, at the Evening for Elon event in New York event on Thursday, Sept. 15.

Findley offered a "Lessons from Leaders" presentation to a crowded LaRose Digital Theatre in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
