To help inflation-plagued and struggling families ease the burden of buying necessities, several states are scrapping the sales tax on infant and adult diapers.

Colorado and Iowa have both agreed since May to get rid of the state tax on all diapers, beginning in 2023. Florida and Maryland’s laws took effect in July.

A Delaware bankruptcy judge has approved parts of the Boy Scouts of America’s reorganization plan but has rejected other provisions,  saying the organization has decisions to make regarding the plan. The judge issued her 281-page ruling on Friday afternoon, months after concluding a trial in the case. The judge indicated that she is willing to hold a status conference upon a request by attorneys for the Boy Scouts.  The BSA’s plan proposed the creation of a $2.6 billion fund to compensate tens of thousands of men who say were sexually abused as children involved in Scouting, while maintaining the organization’s financial ability to continue operating.

New Mexico politicians joined with film stars to celebrate the legacy of the “Breaking Bad” TV series by installing statues Friday of mythical methamphetamine cookers Walter White and Jesse Pinkman at a convention center in Albuquerque. Local politicians including Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller mixed with “Breaking Bad” stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and director Vince Gilligan to help unveil the artwork, donated by Gilligan and Sony Pictures. The 2008-13 show and its ongoing prequel “Better Call Saul” helped fuel a renaissance in filmmaking across New Mexico, while also cutting close to Albuquerque’s real-life struggles with drug addiction and crime.

Derek Wolfe signed a one-day contract with the Broncos so he could retire in Denver, where he spent the bulk of his NFL career. Wolfe says injuries finally caught up to him and now he's looking forward to chasing his 3-year-old daughter around instead of pursuing quarterbacks. Wolfe helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50 as a key part of one of the stingiest defenses in league history. He spent his last two seasons in Baltimore but he didn't play in 2021 after injuring a hip in August. He was released by the Ravens last month.

A nursing home run by the city of San Francisco will stop discharging patients as part of a federally-mandated closure plan. Four patients died within days or weeks of being moved from Laguna Honda Hospital. In April, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services terminated its payments to Laguna Honda after two patients survived overdoses at the facility in 2021. Inspectors with the California Department of Public Health declared it to be “in a state of substandard care.” The federal agency pays for most of the nursing home’s 700 patients. It ordered the facility to start discharges or transfers ahead of a mid-September mandated closure. On Thursday, regulators agreed to pause the transfers.

Beyoncé has been reborn again; this time it’s on a shimmering dance floor. In her seventh studio album, “Renaissance,” she has subverted the public’s perception of her hitmaking history. Six years since her Grammy award-winning “Lemonade,” people expect Beyoncé to consistently deliver. But she does not allow herself to be pigeonholed in her consistency, perfectionism and pop/R&B genre. She croons confidently in “Cozy,” that she is “comfortable in my skin. Cozy with who I am,” and it shows in this hourlong 16-track album.

A California woman has been sentenced to between 21 years and life in prison for killing a mother and father and injuring their three young children in a drunk driving crash while the family was out looking at Christmas lights. The Orange County District Attorney’s office says 23-year-old Grace Coleman was sentenced Friday after previously pleading guilty to two counts of murder and other charges. Authorities say Coleman was driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than twice the legal limit in December 2020 when she ran a red light and crashed into the car driven by Henry Saldana-Mejia as he took his family to see Christmas lights.

Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson says several unpaid vehicle tax bills were a surprise to him. WRAL-TV cited records showing the North Carolina official was delinquent on four Guilford County tax bills, their due dates ranging from 2006 to 2018. The Guilford tax office confirmed that five bills totaling $1,271 — a fifth in his wife's name — were paid Thursday. Robinson says they paid immediately as soon as they became aware of the bills. Robinson is a likely candidate for governor in 2024. He says past challenges with personal finances have taught him lessons that would help him run state government.

Singer Dua Lipa released a statement Thursday after fireworks unexpectedly went off into the crowd at her Wednesday night show in Toronto.

The Republican dustup to determine who tries to flip a Democratic congressional seat in Nashville this fall has hit its final week. As early voting ends in the Aug. 4 primary election, voters in Tennessee’s open 5th Congressional District have grown familiar with nonstop TV ads from vaguely named groups. They are attacking any of three top fundraising hopefuls in the nine-candidate GOP field. Those are Maury County Mayor Andy Ogles, former state House Speaker Beth Harwell and retired Tennessee National Guard Brig. Gen. Kurt Winstead. For Democrats, state Sen. Heidi Campbell is advancing to November unopposed. The seat is open after Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper decided he couldn't win any of the three new redistricted Nashville seats.

Ignore the leaks — Beyoncé's seventh studio album "Renaissance" has officially arrived. As hinted, it's an all-encompassing album for the dance floor, blending house, disco, Afrobeat and more on a 16-song body of work, that compels you to simply "Move."

Johnny Depp just made his first public foray into painting, and it almost instantly brought in $3.6 million.

The U.S. Forest Service has ordered a halt to the expansion of a Rocky Mountains ski resort after contractors mistakenly demolished protected alpine tundra to create a temporary road. The Colorado Sun reported Friday that the Keystone Resort expansion of new trails and lifts was stopped after officials saw work crews carving the path into protected land outside the approved construction area. The halt issued earlier this month suspended development of Keystone resort’s 0.9-square-mile expansion until the environmental impacts of the unauthorized road are evaluated. That could delay the opening of the the resort’s 16-trail expansion this winter. Keystone Resort is owned by Vail Resorts, Inc.

California's public health officer said they are pressing for more vaccine and closely monitoring the spread of the monkeypox virus. But Dr. Tomás Aragón says they have not decided whether to declare a statewide emergency as the city of San Francisco announced Thursday. California has reported nearly 800 probable and confirmed cases of more than 3,000 identified in the U.S. Only New York has reported more cases. Aragón says the state is tapping into the network built during the COVID pandemic to vaccinate people and get them information. Members of the LGBTQ community have been furious with slow response from government at all levels.

Neil Patrick Harris has played an impressive number of what he calls “extreme characters.” He says that makes his role in the comedy “Uncoupled” especially appealing. Harris says he was attracted to the part's “normalcy” and nuance. He plays a suddenly single New Yorker, dumped by his partner of 17 years, who stumbles into an unfamiliar dating world. The eight-episode “Uncoupled” is out now on Netflix. It represents a still relatively rare Hollywood commodity: a rom-com with a gay character as the lovable hero of the story. The show is from writer-producers Darren Star of “Sex and the City” and Jeffrey Richman of “Modern Family.”

Louisiana’s abortion ban is positioned to be enforced again, after a appeals court ruled the state must be granted a suspensive appeal while a lawsuit challenging the ban continues to play out in court. It wasn’t immediately clear when the ban would go back into effect. According to lawyers of the plaintiff’s in the case, the ban can not be enforced until a state judge signs the motion. The decision is expected to shut down clinics for the third time since the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision last month to end constitutional protections for abortion.

Kadarius Toney’s rookie season with the New York Giants is best described as one great game, one good one and couple of  flashes. It wasn’t what the Giants needed from the first-round draft pick from Florida in a 2021 season where expectations were high. He finished with 39 catches for 420 yards, no touchdowns and lot of little injuries that limited him to 10 games. While Friday’s practice was only the third of training camp, Toney has been impressive. The 6-footer had a highlight-reel catch over cornerback Aaron Robinson in the corner of the end zone on Day 1.

As the U.S. Senate primary campaign nears its end in Missouri, all three of the leading Republican candidates are making it clear that if elected, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell won't have their support. Twenty-one Republicans are on the ballot Tuesday, with former Gov. Eric Greitens, Attorney General Eric Schmitt and U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler believed to be the leading contenders. Eleven Democrats are competing. Greitens, who resigned amid scandal in 2018, has said throughout the campaign he wants McConnell ousted. Schmitt, speaking Wednesday in Columbia, said McConnell hasn’t endorsed him, “and I don’t endorse him for leadership.” Hartzler said Thursday that she wants new leadership in the Senate.

TAMPA, Fla. — Florida continues to rebel against the Biden administration’s efforts to protect LGBTQ youth.

A judge has acquitted a southwestern Missouri woman on murder and two other felony charges in the death of the autistic teenage daughter that she gave up for adoption as a baby. Greene County Circuit Court Judge Calvin Holden on Friday found Rebecca Ruud not guilty of first- and second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and felony abuse or neglect of a child but convicted her of illegally abandoning a corpse. Ruud could get four years in prison when she's sentenced Sept. 15. The charges stemmed from the July 2017 death of 16-year-old Savannah Leckie, whose remains were found in a burn pit on Ruud’s remote property near the Arkansas-Missouri border.

The Nez Perce Tribe and two conservation groups say Idaho officials violated the Clean Air Act as well as the state's regulations by issuing an air quality permit for a proposed gold mine in west-central Idaho. The groups last week filed a petition with the Idaho Board of Environmental Quality seeking to have the permit withdrawn and sent back to the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality for additional work. The department in June issued the permit to Perpetua Resources Idaho for its Stibnite Gold Project about 40 miles east of McCall. The company says the three-year permit process found the project meets strict state and federal clean air requirements.

LOS ANGELES — A six-year saga that started with smiles and handshakes ended with a sterile settlement document, Under Armour agreeing to pay UCLA $67.491 million to resolve the school's lawsuit against the sports apparel giant, according to a document reviewed by The Times.

Brandon Aiyuk feels like he’s in a good place after an up-and-down first two seasons in the NFL. Aiyuk followed up a promising rookie season in 2020 with a stint in coach Kyle Shanahan’s doghouse early last season. Aiyuk recovered in the second half to make a big impact on San Francisco’s offense and is building on that for 2022. Shanahan says Aiyuk’s rollercoaster start to his career can be attributed partially to the weird circumstances he faced as a rookie when there was no offseason program and he didn't learn the level of work needed to thrive in the NFL.

The Brazilian government has granted a preliminary environmental permit for paving a controversial highway that cuts through one of the Amazon’s most preserved areas. The BR-319 is about 900 kilometers long and is the only highway connecting the city of Manaus with the nation’s larger urban centers further south. Today, nearly half BR-319 is unpaved, and that stretch usually becomes impassable during the rainy season which lasts up to three months some years. That keeps potential forest clear cutters away. Researchers and environmentalists argue that paving this road will lead to mass clearing of pristine rainforest, but President Jair Bolsonaro celebrated the advance.

WASHINGTON — Wisconsin State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski dropped out of the state’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary Friday and endorsed Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, clearing his path to victory in the Aug. 9 contest that will set Barnes up to challenge GOP Sen. Ron Johnson in November.

The Respect for Marriage Act would ensure that same-sex marriages are recognized nationwide. The House-passed legislation has some Republican support and is expected to come up for a vote in the Senate in September. It is part of an effort by Democrats to protect various rights in the wake of the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion nationwide. While the Senate is not expected to approve separate House efforts to legalize abortion or protect contraception rights, the same-sex marriage bill has a real shot at passage after a handful of Republicans indicated they would vote for it.

Spain has confirmed death of a person from monkeypox, which Spanish media say is a first in the country. The Health Ministry said Friday that 120 people had been admitted to the hospital so far with monkeypox and one had died. The ministry gave no further details regarding the death. It said Spain had 4,298 people infected with the virus. Experts suspect that monkeypox outbreaks in Europe and North America were triggered by sex at two raves in Belgium and Spain. The current outbreak is by far the biggest involving the virus, and it’s been designated as a global health emergency by the World Health Organization.
