The first golden buzzer of America's Got Talent was given to saxophonist Avery Dixon. He has more accomplishments than just his musical skills.

The premiere of this year’s America’s Got Talent started with a bang as host Terry Crews awarded saxophonist Avery Dixon the first golden buzzer of the season. Moments before the episode ended, a visibly nervous 21-year-old Avery sauntered across the stage with his saxophone, prepared to wow the audience, judges, and viewers alike. Upon introducing himself, he shared his heartbreaking story. Avery, like many youngsters nowadays, was bullied for his differences.

Avery was born over 20 weeks early and was placed in the NICU. When he was born, he weighed one pound and eight ounces and his organs struggled to support his body. America's Got Talent's Avery was given a breathing tube, which created a vocal condition he suffers from today. As a result, his vocal cord doesn’t close, causing his voice to be airy and pitchy. The bullies took notice and he turned to music to overcome his hardships. Despite his differences and challenges, he’s excelled as a saxophonist. However, there is more to this unique musician than meets the eye.

Aside from his golden buzzer on AGT, Avery has won several music awards. The Tommie Smith Youth Initiative awarded him Musician of the Year in 2018. He’s also been given awards from the Gospel Choice Awards and received the VSA International Young Soloists Award. His inspiration comes from his great grandfather, Maxwell Davis, who was a popular R&B saxophonist. Maxwell established his name by working with popular artists like ZZ Hill and BB King. However, music isn’t the only area in America's Got Talent's Avery's life that he thrives.

In honor of his hardships and the hospital that saved his life when he was born, Avery founded an organization called GraceNotes and Totes. Avery collects his performance money to create monthly gift bags of pristine preemie and newborn clothes, diapers, wipes, stuffed toys, and blankets to families with preemie babies. The gift bags contain everything new parents need to welcome their newest addition to the family on a month-to-month basis.

Overall, fans were already impressed with his heartening, soulful saxophone performance, but it appears the 21-year-old has made an important name for himself outside of his music too. It seems Avery is following in the footsteps of his famous grandfather. Although the golden buzzer guarantees a spot in the live shows, it also means America's Got Talent viewers will miss out on another performance. Nonetheless, fans are eager to watch Avery's next flawless performance on the America’s Got Talent semifinals.
