A 3-alarm fire at a Renton apartment complex that destroyed cars, an apartment building and displaced multiple people on Wednesday night reignited overnight.

Firefighters were called to the Fairwood Landing Apartments, which is located just south of Southeast Petrovitsky Road and 140th Avenue Southeast.

Crews at the scene believe the fire started at the car port next to the building. The fire then spread toward the building, damaging 12 units along with multiple vehicles.

One woman who lives at the complex next to the building saw the flames engulf the carport. She says she called 911 and within a few minutes crews arrived.

“By the time the fire department got here, fire … the car port was completely engulfed in flames. It was starting to fall forward and then it started catching on to the building behind us. Or behind it,” a woman named Amanda said.

Many people in the area came by to see what happened and were heartbroken to see numerous people displaced by the fire. Theresa Young and Shelley Reynolds live close by. They say they have a friend who lives at the complex. Initially, they weren’t sure if it was their building impacted. But Young says it was beautiful to see many people jump in to help.

“And we all went to Big Lots. And before Alejandra’s family came, we were buying pampers and diapers and water,” Young said.

“It’s one of those things where the community really needs to rally, get together and help folks out as much as possible,” Amanda said.

Early Thursday, crews were called back to the apartment complex when the fire reignited at about 2:25 a.m.

The Red Cross is helping those who were impacted by the fire. Crews continue to investigate the cause.
