Tomorrow we celebrate yet another Bermuda Day — perhaps one of our most significant days of this year.

As a country with diverse cultures, we tend to celebrate the day in many different ways. From early in the morning, many will line the streets to watch the runners and cyclists. Others will be setting out on watercraft and raft-ups. Some may simply go to the beach for their first dip.

Then there are the “special ones”, who will be camping out tonight to “protect” their spot.

You know those spots in and around Hamilton, which once a year belong to certain families or groups of friends. Those spots that have been cordoned off, taped up and/or spray-painted to mark “ownership”.

There will be numerous groups who have spent countless hours putting together floats, bands, dancing troupes and other historical features.

Cheers to the smart folks who go into town and can walk around all day and never run out of persons willing to feed them and/or keep them hydrated with a wide variety of colourful liquids.

However we spend it, this year should hold a lot of significance, as it has been our first real Bermuda Day since 2019. Yes, the first time that we can gather “en masse” as we used to for decades on end.

We can take a moment to see those we may not have seen for quite some time. Whether it be walking around Hamilton, cruising around the island or simply splashing in our warm waters.

Whatever we do, let us remain conscious of Covid-19 numbers rising, keep that hand sanitiser flowing and, yes, also dab on the sunblock.

Most of all, remember that Bermuda Day, while celebrated in many different ways, belongs to all of us.

As the Gombey cry goes, “Ay-o, ay-o, ay-o.”
