ELLSWORTH — On Friday, Sept. 23, Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry will host its first-ever Fill The Grand food and funds drive to benefit the pantry’s clients.

“The pantry is asking the community to fill every seat in the historic Grand theater with bags of food and funds to support our mission: ending food insecurity in Hancock County,” said Andy Matthews, Loaves & Fishes’ board president.

The event was inspired by AIO Food & Energy Assistance in Rockland, which has held two successful events in Rockland and provided guidance for the Fill The Grand event.

Loaves & Fishes encourages community organizations, businesses and residents to do food and fund drives within their groups, workplaces and neighborhoods to help with the drive. The food and funds collected will go directly to support Hancock County families. Any individuals or groups interested in holding a food drive within their group are asked to contact the coordinator listed below for details.

Monetary donations are welcome. Donor dollars go further since Loaves & Fishes can purchase food through partners at a competitive price. Individuals can sponsor a bag at $25, which will fill one seat in the theater. Those interested in sponsoring a bag through a financial donation can make it online at loavesandfishesellsworth.org. Financial donations and nonperishable food with a current expiration date can be dropped off at The Grand (165 Main St. in Ellsworth) on Friday, Sept. 23, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Loaves & Fishes would be grateful for donations of the most needed items, including: soups (chicken noodle and condensed tomato), canned chicken and tuna, stuffing mix, jelly, paper towels (single packs), dog food (canned food and 5-pound dry food), cat food (canned food and 5-pound dry food), baby shampoo and ointment and adult diapers (male and female, larger sizes). Glass packaging is fine for any food items.

Loaves & Fishes hopes the event will raise $10,000.
